Boring deep holes is where many shops lose hours to chatter, taper, and surface finish problems. The right boring bar choice depends entirely on your length-to-diameter (L:D) ratio. Here is the practical guide.
The L:D Rule
L:D ratio = bar overhang ÷ bar diameter. This determines bar selection:
- L:D ≤ 3 — Standard steel-shank bar with carbide insert works fine
- L:D 3–4 — Use heavy-metal (tungsten alloy) shank or solid carbide bar
- L:D 4–7 — Require solid carbide bar with internal coolant
- L:D 7–10 — Use anti-vibration (Silent Tools) bars with internal damper
- L:D > 10 — Damped bars only; reduce parameters significantly
Solid Carbide vs Steel Shank
Carbide is 3× stiffer than steel by Young’s modulus. A solid carbide boring bar at L:D=5 will outperform a steel bar at L:D=4 in chatter resistance. The cost premium is 3–5× but tool life and surface finish gains pay back quickly in deep boring.
Anti-Vibration (Damped) Bars
For L:D above 7, passive damped bars from Sandvik Silent Tools or Iscar Whisperline contain a tuned-mass damper inside the bar that absorbs vibration. They cost $500–$2000 each but enable boring at depths impossible otherwise.
Internal Coolant Is Critical
Deep boring traps chips inside the hole. Without high-pressure internal coolant (>500 PSI), chips score the bore wall and damage the insert. Always specify internal-coolant boring bars for L:D > 4.
Insert Geometry
Use positive-rake inserts (CCMT, CCGT) for boring — they reduce cutting forces by 30–40% versus negative-rake (CNMG). Lower forces = less deflection = better surface finish.
Specifically for boring: CCMT, DCMT, TCMT with 80°, 55°, or 60° point angles. Choose corner radius based on surface finish requirement (Ra) and depth of cut.
Cutting Parameters for Deep Boring
Reduce parameters from standard turning:
- Speed (Vc): 60–80% of normal turning
- Feed: 70% of normal
- Depth of cut: limit to 50% of insert nose radius for L:D > 5
