Choosing Between BT40 and CAT40 for Your Machine

BT40 and CAT40 share the same 7:24 spindle taper — physically interchangeable. But the retention knob (pull stud) differs. Mixing them damages the spindle drawbar.

Standards Origin

  • BT40 — Japanese MAS-403 standard. Most popular VMC standard worldwide outside US.
  • CAT40 — American Caterpillar V-Flange standard. Common on US-built machines.

Critical Difference: Pull Stud

Spec BT40 CAT40
Pull stud thread M16 5/8″-11
Pull stud length 17mm 0.62″ (15.7mm)
Pull stud retention Symmetric Asymmetric V-flange
Drawbar interface Symmetric collet V-flange collet

How to Identify Your Machine

  1. Look at the spindle nameplate — usually shows “BT40”, “CAT40”, or “ISO40”
  2. If unmarked, measure existing pull stud thread (M16 = BT, 5/8″ = CAT)
  3. Asian-built machines (Mazak, Mori Seiki, Yamazaki) typically BT
  4. US-built machines (Haas, Hardinge, Cincinnati) typically CAT
  5. European machines (DMG Mori, Hermle) variable, often HSK

Performance Differences (Practical)

For most applications, performance is identical:

  • Same maximum RPM rating (12,000-15,000 typical)
  • Same repeatability (~5 µm)
  • Same tool change time (1.5-2 sec)
  • Same cost ($60-120 for general holders)

BT has slightly more global supplier support (more Asian holder brands).

If You Have Both Standards

Some shops have a mix of BT and CAT machines. Solutions:

  • Standardize tool numbering by machine (T1-T20 for BT40 mill, T21-T40 for CAT40 mill)
  • Color-code tool holders (red flag = BT, blue = CAT)
  • Don’t share a presetter without clear ID system

Don’t Mix

Loading a CAT pull stud into a BT spindle (or vice versa):

  • Wrong thread engagement → drawbar damage
  • Asymmetric vs symmetric retention → spindle vibration
  • Eventual spindle bearing damage
