Cutting Oil vs Soluble Coolant vs MQL: Decision Guide

Coolant choice affects tool life by 30-200% in many materials. Wrong choice destroys insert grades, the right choice extends production runs.

Soluble Oil (Water-Based Emulsion)

Most common shop coolant. Mix 5-10% with water.

  • Best for: General steel, cast iron, aluminum, stainless
  • Pros: Cheap, good cooling, anti-corrosion
  • Cons: Bacterial growth, disposal regulated, mist exposure
  • Don’t use for: Hard turning (CBN inserts crack), polycarbonate (stress crack), Swiss-type guide bushings

Synthetic Coolant

Water + organic chemicals (no oil). Higher concentration ratio.

  • Best for: HP coolant systems, low-mist requirements
  • Pros: Less misting, longer sump life
  • Cons: Higher cost, can irritate skin

Cutting Oil (Sulfur-Active)

Pure oil with extreme-pressure additives.

  • Best for: Tapping, threading, broaching, deep boring, Swiss-type
  • Pros: Best lubrication, no dilution issues, no bacteria
  • Cons: Expensive, smoke at high speeds, fire risk on hot chips

MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication)

  • Pros: Triples tool life on superalloys, breaks chips, removes heat
