Carbide tools cost $50-500 each. Improper handling causes invisible edge damage that destroys tool life before first use.

Why Handling Matters

Carbide is HARD but BRITTLE. A 6-inch drop onto steel can chip the cutting edge invisibly, then fail catastrophically in cut.

Storage Best Practices

Inserts

• Keep in original packaging until use
• Boxes upright in labeled drawers
• Group by ISO classification
• Humidity below 50%

End Mills

• Vertical tool stands with size-specific holes
• Foam-lined drawers prevent edge contact
• Label by diameter and length

Tool Holders

• Vertical storage in modular tool carts
• Cover spindle taper
• Inspect pull stud monthly
• Air-dust spindle taper before use

Handling Protocols

When Picking Up an Insert

1. Use tweezers — never bare fingers (skin oil affects coatings)
2. Hold by body, not edge
3. Inspect under 10× loupe
4. If dropped, INSPECT — don’t just use

When Mounting

1. Clean pocket with compressed air
2. Inspect shim — replace if worn
3. Place insert with light tap (don’t force)
4. Tighten to manufacturer torque (use torque wrench)

Tool Life Tracking

• By time — index every X minutes of cut
• By count — index after Y parts
• By measurement — index when forces increase
