How to Read a Carbide Insert Spec Sheet

Manufacturer spec sheets contain a wealth of optimization data, but the format intimidates new machinists.

Anatomy of a Spec Sheet

  1. Insert designation and dimensions
  2. Material and ISO grade compatibility
  3. Cutting parameter recommendations
  4. Chip breaker selection guide
  5. Application notes

Section 1: Designation

The ISO code (CNMG 12 04 08-MM) tells you everything about geometry. See our complete ISO decoder.

Section 2: Material Compatibility

ISO color codes:

  • P (blue) — Steel
  • M (yellow) — Stainless
  • K (red) — Cast iron
  • N (green) — Non-ferrous
  • S (brown) — Superalloy
  • H (gray) — Hardened

Stars or fill bars: full = best, partial = OK, empty = avoid.

Section 3: Cutting Parameters

  • Vc range — Cutting speed in m/min
  • fn range — Feed per revolution in mm/rev
  • ap range — Depth of cut in mm

Use middle of each range as starting point.

Section 4: Chip Breaker Codes

Suffix Operation
-F Finishing — light, low force
-M Medium — general-purpose
-R Roughing — heavy, max MRR
-WMX, -PMX Wiper — best surface finish

Application Notes (Watch For)

  • “Not for interrupted cuts” — avoid for fly cutting
  • “Coolant required” — don’t use dry
  • “Minimum DOC X mm” — below this, the insert rubs
  • “Maximum tool overhang X” — vibration limit
