Coated vs Uncoated Carbide Inserts: How to Choose

Carbide insert coatings can extend tool life by 5–10×, but the wrong coating choice can destroy tool life faster than uncoated. This guide gives you the practical rules.

Why Coatings Help

A 3–15 µm coating layer on carbide does three jobs:

  • Wear resistance — Coating hardness (HV 2500–4000) is 2–3× harder than carbide substrate
  • Heat barrier — Low thermal conductivity keeps heat in chip, away from tool
  • Friction reduction — Smooth coating reduces chip welding and built-up edge

PVD vs CVD

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) coatings are thicker (10–15 µm) and harder. Best for high-volume continuous turning of steel and cast iron. Trade-off: thick coating reduces edge sharpness and creates tensile stress at edge.

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings are thinner (3–5 µm) and leave a sharper edge. Compressive stress at edge improves toughness. Best for milling, threading, finishing, and difficult materials (stainless, titanium).

Common Coating Types

Coating Color Best For
TiN Gold General-purpose, moderate wear, lower-cost option
TiCN Blue-gray Steel turning, abrasive materials
TiAlN / AlTiN Black-violet Hardened steel, dry machining, high-temperature
Al2O3 (alumina) Black Cast iron, heat barrier in CVD multilayer
ZrN Bright gold Aluminum (no buildup), copper
DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) Black Aluminum (high Si), graphite, copper
PCD (polycrystalline diamond) Aluminum, composites, non-ferrous

When Uncoated Wins

Uncoated carbide is still the right choice for:

  • Aluminum and non-ferrous — Polished uncoated avoids material adhesion (or use ZrN)
  • Light interrupted cuts — Coatings can chip in heavy interrupted cuts
  • Low-volume tool steel — When a few parts per insert is acceptable
  • Composites/plastics — Coating offers no benefit, polished sharper edge gives best finish

Coating Selection Cheat Sheet

  • Steel (ISO P) — CVD multilayer (Al2O3/TiCN/TiN) or PVD AlTiN for dry/HSM
  • Stainless (ISO M) — PVD TiAlN or AlTiN, never CVD (edge too dull)
  • Cast iron (ISO K) — CVD with Al2O3 outer layer for heat resistance
  • Aluminum (ISO N) — Uncoated polished or PVD ZrN
  • Superalloys (ISO S) — PVD AlTiN with submicron substrate
  • Hardened steel (ISO H) — CBN or ceramic, or PVD nano-coating on micrograin carbide
