How to Choose CNC Tool Holders: BT, HSK, CAT Standards
Picking the wrong tool holder standard means thousands of dollars of incompatible tooling. Hooguu stocks BT, HSK, CAT, and ISO/SK holders from Big Daishowa, Lyndex-Nikken, Sandvik Coromant, Kennametal, Iscar, and others.
The 4 Main Standards Explained
- BT (Bottle-grip Taper) — Japanese MAS-403 standard. BT30, BT40, BT50. The most popular VMC standard worldwide.
- CAT (Caterpillar V-Flange) — American standard. Same 7:24 taper as BT but different retention knob threads. Common in older US-built machines.
- HSK (Hohl-Schaft-Kegel) — German DIN 69893 hollow-shank. Required for high-speed machining (>12,000 RPM) due to face contact + taper engagement. Sizes HSK-A40 through HSK-A100.
- ISO/SK (DIN 2080) — Older European 7:24 taper. Limited high-speed capability. Mostly legacy machines.
BT vs CAT: They Look the Same, They're NOT
BT40 and CAT40 share the same 7:24 spindle taper geometry, but the retention knob (pull stud) threads differ:
- BT40: M16 pull stud thread
- CAT40: 5/8"-11 pull stud thread
Mixing them damages the spindle drawbar. Always verify the pull stud thread before mounting any holder.
When to Choose HSK
HSK costs $140-$280 vs $60-$120 for BT/CAT. The premium is worth it when:
- Spindle speed exceeds 12,000 RPM (HSK's face contact prevents pull-out)
- Aerospace or precision work requires repeatability under 5 µm
- Tool change time matters (HSK is 30-40% faster)
- You need balanced rotation for high-speed milling
Tool Holder Types Within Each Standard
- End mill holders — Set screw or weldon flat for endmill grip
- Collet chucks — ER, OZ, TG collets for round shank tools (most versatile)
- Shrink-fit holders — Best concentricity (under 3 µm), require induction heater
- Hydraulic chucks — Excellent vibration damping, premium price
- Boring bar holders — Square or round shank for indexable boring tools
- Drill chucks — Keyed or keyless for HSS twist drills
- Tap holders — Tension/compression float for thread-cutting
Critical Specs to Verify Before Purchase
- Spindle taper standard (BT/CAT/HSK + size, e.g. BT40)
- Pull stud thread (BT/CAT only)
- Tool side bore type (collet, weldon, ER, etc.)
- Maximum RPM rating (especially for HSM applications)
- Through-coolant capability if needed
- Balance grade (G6.3 standard, G2.5 for high-speed)
